CISM and its Motto

Introduction & Motto

Counseil International du Sport Militaire acronym as CISM is the only Military Sports Body that is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The aims of CISM are to develop friendly relations between the Armed Forces of member nations, promote physical education and sports activities, provide mutual technical assistance, support less privileged members in the name of friendship and solidarity, contribute towards the balanced and harmonious development of military personnel, and contribute to the international effort for universal peace. This ideal is encapsulated in the CISM motto "Friendship Through Sport".


The Headquarters of the CISM are located at Brussels and has grown from the ab initio membership of FIVE founder Nations of France, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg to a strong 128 Members on date. India joined this elite Military Sports Body in 1999. Early this year CISM was recognised by UNO as the largest NGO devoted to promotion of peace through sports. CISM plans to diversify into Winter Sports by 2009.


CISM conducts sports championships in over 20 disciplines annually and conducts consolidated edition of The Games every Four Years. The details of the first three editions of the games are as under: -


(a) First Games : Rome (Italy), 1995 (attended by 4017 athletes from 93 nations)

(b) Second Games : Zagreb (Croatia), 1999 (attended by 6734 athletes from 82 nations)

(c) Third Games : Catania (Italy), 2003 (attended by 3406 athletes from 87 nations)

In 2003, India bid for hosting the Fourth Edition of the Games and this is the first time when the Games are being held out of Europe; the first time being held in Asia and the first time being conducted by India. On date 4804 Participants from 97 Countries will participate for the 11 events in Hyderabad and 306 Participants from 33 Nations will take part in Sailing and Triathlon at Mumbai.
