EVENT Arrangements for the forthcoming Military Games are in full swing
India may not have won any medals in the Military World Games till now. But it is bound to be assured of one - on the organisational front if everything goes well when the fourth edition will be held in Hyderabad from October 14 to 21. To demonstrate its readiness for the games, Major General Anil Chait took one big step in organising a fashion parade. This which not only put on display the much revered attires of the soldiers over the centuries but also ensured an element of glamour to prove a point or two in the Defence forces' preparedness in all respects for the Games. "These Games will be on, and it's a bigger responsibility that they have thrusted on us, when compared to the inaugural 2003 Afro-Asian Games," says the Cyberabad Police Commissioner S.Prabhakar Reddy. He also informs that the desired security apparatus will be there to take care of any exigency. "A 10,000 -storng, fully-trained force will be in action for the Games," he stresses. "We have designed a four-tiered security system to take care of all mandatory requirements." The Cyberabad Police Commissioner also appeals to the sport lovers to adhere to the general security instructions in the interest of one and all. S.N.Mohanty, Principal Securetary, terms the recent bomb blasts as one of those 'random' incidents. "When we are planning for such a big event, we are aware of the huge responsibilities and we will see the right mechanism is there in place," he insists.According to Defence official Maj Gen Anil Chait, the fact the Defence forces are fully engrossed in the preparations for the Games is plain proof of its readiness for the mega event. And the plain figures of participation can only redouble the determination of the organisers to ensure incident-free Games.Just consider this: 4,581 military personnel from 89 countries will be in action; of these 3,006 are athletes (2,272 men and 734 women) and 1,575 team officials. This excludes the 1,300 technical officials who along with the organising committee members add up to a sizable sum. The 11 disciplines will see 3,227 athletes compete for 1,076 medals. And more importantly, there will be 3,377 civilian and military volunteers, 17,400 security personnel from the Andhra Pradesh State Police and 2,600 home guards who will substantially add up the total tally to about 35,000 persons involved in the Games, one way or the other.
